Often, films that involve storylines focusing on animals can become unintentionally treacly, but “Eight Below” is the real deal, thoroughly heart felt and full of emotional conviction.

Based on an actual real life, true incident that occurred in the late 1950’s and was adapted into the 1980’s Japanese film, “Nankyoku Monogatari”, “Eight Below” lives up to the promotional hype and IS an uplifting, inspiring story of the courage, loyalty, and immense bond of friendship between Antarctica expedition guide, survival expert, Jerry Shepard, portrayed by the always effervescent, sparkling, actor, Paul Walker (who we simply adore!), and his faithful 8 sled dogs.

The story focuses on Shepard and his 8 trusty sled dogs guiding a scientific crew’s expedition in the farthest, most remote reaches of Antarctica. When the head scientist is severely injured in an accident (in which the sled dogs save him), and a catastrophic Antarctic storm hits, the entire human expedition crew is airlifted out, but they must leave Jerry’s heroic sled dogs behind.

Jerry struggles to go on with his life back home in the warmth and safety of the USA, while we see the dogs struggling against some of nature’s most dangerous and unforgiving elements, to survive.

But, Jerry, unlike his fellow expedition staff, can’t forget the eight brave friends he left behind and struggles to get the funds and air transport to go back to the Antarctica wilderness to rescue them.

We won’t tell you what becomes of the 4 legged hounds, Maya, Max, Shorty, Old Jack, Dewey, Truman, Buck, and Shadow, but we WILL tell you that this truly is an amazing “tail” of the immense, unbreakable bond of camaraderie of one man and his dogs and the incredible lengths that both will go to, on behalf of one another.

The exceptional scenes of the dogs’ own invincible bonds with one another as they struggle to literally stay alive when forced to stay behind are heart wrenching and touching with just the right amount of sentiment that naturally resonates with our emotions, as is Shepard’s equally heart breaking despair and frustration at leaving his fellow heroes behind and the road blocks and red tape that threaten to keep him from bringing his canine crew back home.

Kudos especially, for the casting of the underrated, but immensely gifted, Walker, in the lead role as Shepard. As with Walker’s previous resume of acting roles and films, Walker imbues his role with, and displays such genuine affability and unflinching loyalty with his dogs, that the film is worth the price of admission just to experience the utter depth of conviction, sense of duty and honor, and joy shared between these nine, all for one, and one for all, friends!

“Eight Below” is quite the sterling achievement in showcasing a compelling storyline and significantly, outstanding character driven development not only in its human characters, but in its canine characters, who are given as much attention to adeptly drawing and fully fleshing out their character detail, establishing an integral, resonant emotional connection with us, as their human counterparts are.

What a wonderful, engaging, and at times, heart string tugging story of both man and man’s best friend, overcoming even the most earth shattering odds, to survive, and to remain together, and the unbreakable ties that bond them together.

“Eight Below” offers up a truly inspirational tale. Talk about the definitive feel good movie of this year!

We give it a rating of FOUR Paws UP!
