Bob Geldof has already signed a deal to release Live 8 on DVD this November 2005. Live 8 will be presented by EMI. Geldof is already ecstatic and overwhelmed with exuberant anticipation to the historic event’s release on DVD, proudly exclaiming, “I hope this will be the biggest selling DVD of all time! It deserves to be! More importantly perhaps, it should be, for it will help us achieve our goal of changing the lives of the extreme poor for the better and making our generation the one that helped end the disgrace of poverty.”

The Live 8 DVD release this November, will come on the heels of the first and one year Anniversary of Live Aid’s DVD release this past November 2004. The DVD of Live Aid received International unanimous critical and commercial acclaim, after a 19 year wait for its release. Live Aid took place on July 13, 1985. Live 8 takes place this Saturday July 2, 2005. Thanks to Geldof, the wait this time for the DVD release of Live 8, will be a matter of waiting mere months!

Also, more stellar music artists have come on board at the Philadelphia, USA concert. Alicia Keys, The Black Eyed Peas, Def Leppard, Josh Groban, and Toby Keith will perform. Also as was the case at Live Aid, when Hollywood’s elite, luminaries Jack Nicholson and Bette Midler introduced the acts in Philly, this time around, actors Jimmy Smits, Natalie Portman, Chris Tucker, Salma Hayek, and Jennifer Connolly will be doing the honors in Philly.

And, at last, Geldof has pulled off what we all knew would be his vision and dream fulfilled and come true, Russia, the 8th and final country of the G8 nations, will be participating in Live 8 and hosting it’s leg of the concert, simultaneously with the other Live 8 concerts on Saturday, July 2, 2005. Red Square in Moscow, Russia will stage the concert. Here’s the lineup as of 6/27/2005.

Moscow:
Pet Shop Boys
Bravo
B-2
Moral Code X
Spleen
Valery Sutkin

As previously discussed AOL will be streaming live, and for free, the entire Live 8 event, webcasting from all of the participating cities. The entire event will be archived on AOL for 6 weeks, so an International audience of people can watch again and again this wonderful, momentous, history changing benefit and poverty awareness raising event, glimpse memorable and favorite moments and acts, or catch acts and performances that they missed.

Again…hats off to Sir Bob Geldof, all of the Live 8 organizers, promoters, music artists, performers, and everyone involved in helping to plan and stage this from the hugest of hearts event, who are selflessly giving of themselves, to the cause, to hopefully realize a world without poverty, without hunger. Here’s wishing you all the utmost respect, regard, esteem, and all heartfelt best wishes! Only 5 days to go. Happy Live 8 Day!

Tokyo, Japan has officially joined Live 8 as the 7th G8 nation to participate in the international series of Live 8 concerts. Makuhari Messe in Tokyo will host Japan’s concert.

The Tokyo concert is part of all of the Live 8 concerts and event to be held Saturday July 2, 2005, to raise global public awareness into pressuring the leaders of the G8 nations who will be attending the G8 Summit July 6 through July 8, 2005 to enact concrete plans to forgive third world debt, particularly in Africa, as well as put into place fair trade initiatives for said nations that could effectively eradicate poverty and encourage foreign aid with world hunger, proper healthcare particularly in the battle of stemming the spread of and finding a cure for AIDS, and enacting further economic development programs in underdeveloped nations.

With Japan now participating in Live 8, only one G8 nation, Russia, is the one country, not yet confirmed for participating in Live 8, but which will hopefully, come through and realize Live 8 organizer Bob Geldof’s vision of all 8 of the G8 nations, proving their good will and intentions by all hosting Live 8 benefit, public awareness concerts to raise the world’s consciousness and attention to third world poverty.

Here is the lineup for Tokyo as of 6/24/2005 with additions to come.

Tokyo:
Bjork
Good Charlotte
Def Tech
Dreams Come True
McFly
Rize

Geldof and the Live 8 organizers are requesting that concertgoers and viewers around the world make their voices heard stronger than ever, by holding a mass text messaging campaign on Saturday July 2, 2005 during Live 8. Geldof is asking the global audience to help him achieve a goal of 20 million text messages supporting Live 8’s message of raising both the public and world leader’s awareness about world poverty. The names of those sending the messages will be seen on a video screen of each concert in each city.

Mobilium Group President/CEO Ralph Simon says, “We don’t think that the world leaders can ignore either (the estimated viewing audience of) 2 billion people being exposed to our message nor, more importantly, a possible 20 million constituents actively text messaging their demand to end world hunger to their respective governments.’’

One week to go and counting as the clock starts officially ticking to the countdown to….Live 8 Day!

Motley Crue & Canada On Board For Live 8 Plus Updates Galore!

Bob Geldof has officially confirmed that Canada, has now come on board becoming the 6th country of the G8 nations, to participate and hold one of the Live 8 concerts also to be simultaneously held on Saturday July 2, 2005. Barrie, Canada will host the Canadian leg of the Live 8 concert which will be held at Park Place. Canadian natives, comedians Dan Akroyd and Tom Greene are hosts for the event.

Topping a bill of the Crème De La Crème of Canadian music artists is American hard rocking superstars, the reunited one and only Motley Crue.

Here’s the lineup as of 6/29/2005, with additional artists and updates to come.

Barrie:
Motley Crue’
Neil Young
Jet
Deep Purple
Bryan Adams
Blue Rodeo
Bruce Cockburn
Barenaked Ladies
Our Lady Peace
The Tragically Hip
African Guitar Summit
The Bachman Cummings Band

Les Trois Accords
Sam Roberts
Simple Plan
Tegan & Sara
Tom Cochrane

In other Live 8 news, The Cure will be headlining at the Palais de Versailles, Paris, France Live 8 concert, and additionally, Muse, Sheryl Crow, Shakira, and Tina Arena have joined the roster of that concert.

PINK FLOYD!!!!
And once again…to reconfirm, a reunited Pink Floyd will be performing at London’s Hyde Park Live 8 concert, seeing the first performance of all 4 original members, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Rick Wright in some twenty years. The relationship between Waters and Gilmour has been contentious at best over the years, with Waters even suing Gilmour at one point for touring under the Pink Floyd banner.

But leave it to Sir Bob Geldof himself, (who portrayed the character of Pink in the film adaptation of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”), to serve as the ultimate peacemaker and bring back together, this legendary band, for what is perhaps the most highly anticipated act and performance of Live 8.

Gilmour, often recognized himself as quite the altruist to charitable causes, has stated that “Like most people, I want to do everything I can to persuade the G8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world. It’s crazy that America gives such a paltry percentage of its GNP to the starving nations. Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if reforming for this concert will help focus attention, then it’s got to be worthwhile.”

While more and more artists are continually joining the lineup at each of the Live 8 concerts, 3 stars that have voluminous rumours swirling of their performing at Live 8, are The Rolling Stones, The Who, and also, a potential satellite link performance by Queen who are touring Internationally with Paul Rodgers doing the fronting honors, with the link being from their July 2nd concert performance in Lisbon, Portugal.

While confirmation is still pending on The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Queen+Paul Rodgers, fan websites are in a feeding frenzy as was also the case prior to the official confirmation of the reunion and performance of Pink Floyd at Live 8.

In addition, activist, artist, and musician Peter Gabriel will be hosting The Eden Project, Africa Calling with Senegalese superstar Youssou N’Dour in Cornwall, England. Here’s the lineup for this companion concert to Live 8, also held Saturday July 2, 2005 whose aim is to highlight and feature musicians from Africa, assisting the cause of Live 8.

Eden Project/Africa Calling:
Angelique Kidjo
Maryam Mursal
Salif Keita
Thomas Mapfumo
Tinariwen
Daara J
Shikisha
Ayub Ogada
Modou Diouf & O Fogum

Hayden Christensen, Hollywood's Hottest New Star & Movie Mogul!

“Hayden Christensen, Hollywood’s Hottest New Star & Movie Mogul!”
By Arlene R. Weiss © Copyright June 10, 2005-All Rights Reserved

With “Star Wars Episode III, Revenge Of The Sith” taking over the film galaxy worldwide, breaking box office records and devouring all other summer 2005 films in its wake, it is a wonderful thing to see George Lucas’ 6th and final episode in the “Star Wars” saga, and the 3rd in the infamous prequels, boast substance over style. The great storytelling of the original trilogy is back, along with esteemed actors Ian McDiarmid, Samuel L. Jackson, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Lee…and the lustrous performance of the intense Hayden Christensen.

Reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker (aka Darth Vader) from “Star Wars Episode II, Attack Of The Clones”, Christensen has proven his mettle as an actor of depth, range and power, imbuing Anakin’s fall from grace and turn to the dark side with the conviction, darkness, and enigmatic complexity of a man torn between what his insightful mind knows is the right thing to do, and what his passionate heart tells him that he MUST do.

In exploring and conveying, ever so subtly the inner tortured soul of Anakin’s conflicted, tormented psyche, Christensen nails the part in a way that is assuredly satisfying both critics and fans alike of the beloved “Star Wars” franchise…while continuing to uphold its mythology by effectively tying up the final loose ends to what is behind, what motivates, and what becomes of the fractured man (Anakin), behind the black mask (Vader).

But Christensen is no newbie to thespian challenges and has been acting for much of his mere 24 years, taking on films, TV, and the stage. A native of Vancouver, Canada, raised in Toronto, Canada, Christensen discovered his calling by sheer serendipity. His older sister had already caught the acting bug and had been cast in a Pringles commercial. Little brother Hayden, only seven years old at the time, came along with her when she was interviewing talent agents…and guess who wound up being coincidentally scouted?

Hayden took this as the cue for “the force” so to speak, that was in the stars for him. More Hollywood than galactic, but stars all the same were laying in wait for Hayden, who took his good fortune seriously and without any doubt to the path that had been paved his way. He then confidently set about to hone his level of skill and ability, as well as to peruse quality roles that he wanted to challenge and likewise, to challenge him and his craft.. Beginning with a run of work in Canadian Television, Hayden made Los Angeles, USA his second home and scored a role in the 1994 film, “In The Mouth Of Madness”. A small part, but a start of things to come.

From there came 1995’s “Harrison Bergeron”, the TV dramatization of romance novelist’s “Danielle Steel’s No Greater Love” in 1996, and 2000’s made for TV film, “Trapped In A Purple Haze.” But 1999, brought Christensen a role in acclaimed Director Sofia Coppola’s (daughter of Francis Ford Coppola), equally lauded “The Virgin Suicides.” People were taking notice of the young Canadian, especially after the theatrical film was screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

2000 was Hayden’s year, bringing him the breakthrough role of a teenager grappling with the aftermath of being molested by his stepmother in the Fox Family Channel TV series “Higher Ground”. Christensen not only wowed audiences…a certain film Director and Jedi master had taken notice of the young actor as well. George Lucas was holding open auditions for the lead role of young Anakin Skywalker for both “Star Wars” Episode II, and Episode III. Christensen was invited to the casting call, and despite being in the running with such high profile young stars as Leonardo DiCaprio and Ryan Phillippe, Christensen proved himself to be a uniquely talented actor as well as a star poised and steady on the horizon. Hayden was undaunted at auditioning among some 400 candidates for the role. Lucas was captivated by his fresh talent and creative gifts and offered Hayden the part, some might say of a lifetime.

While waiting for production to begin on “Attack Of The Clones”, rather than resting on his laurels, Christensen earned more of them, with his next enigmatic role, which some might view as the dramatic, reality precursor to the science fiction, fantasy of “Star Wars” and its protagonist/antagonist, Anakin Skywalker. Hayden gave a bravura starring performance in the 2001 family drama film, “Life As A House” garnering critical acclaim among heavyweights Kevin Kline, Mary Steenburgen, and Kristin Scott Thomas. As the wounded, troubled Sam, the son of Kline’s terminally ill George, and a member of a family going through more than its share of issues and tragedy, Hayden nearly walked away with the film in a modern day James Dean meets Goth teen turn. The Golden Globes, often considered the next step to the Academy Awards, honored Hayden with a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

2002 saw Hayden’s turn in “Star Wars Episode II, Attack Of The Clones”. Posing as both a blessing and a curse, the film offered him a golden opportunity to star in a major blockbuster film, part of a legendary film series, and co-star aside the esteemed ensemble of Ewan McGregor, Samuel L. Jackson, Ian McDiarmid, Natalie Portman, Jimmy Smits, and Christopher Lee. But fans of the original trilogy and critics alike took issue with Lucas’ weak script and tepid dialogue and directing. Unfortunately, much of the fallout fell directly and without warrant, on Christensen, who bore the brunt and took much of a critical beating for realizing Anakin’s first burst on screen as a whining, petulant brat of a teenager that seemed more at home on “Beverly Hills 90210” or “One Tree Hill” than in a legendary film anthology. But Lucas himself, candidly took responsibility for the criticism heaped on Christensen. Lucas also confessed that Hayden had been frustrated in what was Lucas’s own insistence that the actor intentionally play down the darker potential Christensen wanted and knew that he could bring to Anakin, and thus Lucas instead had Hayden portray Skywalker as a typical annoying teen.

To his credit, Hayden’s own talent shined through what Lucas had given him to work with, via the actor’s genuine charm, warmth, and exuberance of Anakin as a Jedi Knight in training and as a handsome, winsome hero beautifully underplaying the delicate balance to and joys of falling in love, winning the heart of Portman’s Padme Amidala (along with scores of enthralled audiences).

Christensen then awed the movers and shakers of movieland, when at merely 21 years old, just as he had taken what material he had with “Clones”, and fashioned it into something substantial and lasting, the young actor became an industry and business savvy provocateur by launching his own Los Angeles based film and television production company along with his brother Tove, Forest Park Pictures. Using the leverage and buzz of his role in “Star Wars”, Christensen secured a 2 year, first look production deal with Warner Brothers’ owned New Line Cinema to much heralding by New Line Cinema production President Toby Emmerich.

In 2003, with Tove sitting in the producer’s seat, Hayden optioned the rights to, and starred in the lead role of “Shattered Glass”, the film portrayal of real life disgraced journalist Stephen Glass who initially won praise at The New Republic Newspaper as a bright and brash writer, only to be exposed as a con artist, fabricating most of his stories. Hayden won over any critical naysayers with his brilliant performance, capturing the cunning, beguiling essence of an over zealous, overconfident, smug snake who tarnished the credibility and integrity of journalism.

But Hayden also started new industry buzz with his stellar business and artistic judgment, collaring and producing an intelligent, smartly written, character driven film. "Shattered Glass" had people talking about and referencing Hayden and his brother Tove, as two creative conscious and business savvy hotshot film producers and independent filmmakers, poised to become two movie mogul brothers, who will be rolling out crafted cinematic works of artistic excellence.

Which brings us up to June 2005, with “Star Wars Episode III, Revenge Of The Sith”. Since opening May 19, the film has broken nearly every box office record, with premieres in London, New York, L.A. and oh yes, at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. Christensen, as well as Lucas, and the film’s cast were in attendance at each and every premiere.

And wouldn’t you know, at this year’s 2005 Cannes Film Festival, who was regularly seen schmoozing like a seasoned, veteran pro at Cannes…with many film industry big wigs? Hayden Christensen, that’s who, as he hob knobbed and rubbed shoulders with many compatriot international indie filmmakers along the Riviera. Hayden was working the industry crowd with smarts, finesse, charisma, elegance, sophistication, and class, like the movie industry insider he is, as well as a soon to be, film industry big wig himself.

Just around May 18, Hayden and Tove signed a new multi-picture distribution deal with major player, Bauer Martinez Distribution, and Hayden has been playing mum about a TV series Forest Park Pictures currently has in development. And with all this mover & shaker goings on, Hayden still is turning out to be the hardest working actor/businessman/movie mogul in La La Land, when he stars in Director Barry Levinson’s upcoming new film “Sixty Six”, part of Levinson’s Baltimore anthology.

Amazingly, George Lucas himself, started out in the 1970’s with colleagues Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola as the new breed of filmmakers and moguls who realized their vision of filmmaking.

Now, in 2005, Hayden Christensen, actor, star, auteur, producer, movie and TV production company chief…perhaps Director someday too, is the young gun that is both Hollywood’s brightest star and its newest hope and champion for the successful future of independent film and television production.

Live 8! It's Official! Bob Geldof Details Multiple Global Concerts & All Star Performers Lineup

Live 8! It’s Official! Bob Geldof Details Multiple Global Concerts and All Star Performers Line Up
By Arlene R. Weiss © Copyright May 31, 2005

Updated 6/29/2005

Bob Geldof has made lightening strike twice! 20 years after organizing Live Aid in 1985, to raise awareness and funds to help with relief to stem the African Famine, Geldof is now realizing his dream of a major music event focusing and demanding the global public’s awareness and attention to actively peruse concrete resolutions to worldwide poverty and to the blight of “debt, aid, and trade” issues plaguing Africa. Geldof has put together Live 8, a mammoth music event conceivably larger and no doubt to prove every bit as historic as the beloved Live Aid.

Today, Bob Geldof officially announced that the much heralded, greatly anticipated Live 8 will be not one, but a minimum of at least five simultaneous music concerts to be held Saturday July 2, Internationally, at London, England’s Hyde Park, at Circus Maximus in Rome, Italy, at the Palais de Versailles in Paris, France, at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, West Germany, (at Park Place in Barrie, Canada...Updated 6/23/2005), (at Makuhari Messe in Tokyo, Japan...Updated June 27, 2005), (at Red Square In Moscow, Russia...Updated 6/27/2005), and at the Museum Of Art in Philadelphia, USA.

Additionally, Cornwall, England will host The Eden Project/Africa Calling, a companion concert to benefit the Live 8 cause, also held Saturday July 2, 2005, hosted by Peter Gabriel and showcasing music artists from Africa. (Updated 6/23/2005)

At an International press conference today at London’s Grosvenor Hotel, with Elton John sitting beside him, and John stating that he was exceedingly proud to be performing at the upcoming event, Geldof discussed that the concerts, all of which will be free to the public, are being staged to assist in raising worldwide public awareness of poverty in developing nations, specifically in Africa, only days before many of the Western World’s leaders meet to address the issues of third world poverty, hunger, and the spread of the AIDS pandemic, at the historic G8 Summit which takes place July 6-July 8, 2005 in Gleneagles, Scotland.

Geldof noted that in precise timing with the G8 Summit, that Live 8 will be a significant platform to address and raise awareness of global poverty. “Here we are again. Live 8 is a unique opportunity for Britain to do something unparalleled in the world and at the beginning of the 21st century, and that is to tilt the world a little bit on its axis in favor of the poor. What Live Aid did joyously, and enthusiastically, was open up the avenues of possibility. Live 8 invites you to walk down them.”

Geldof was joined at the media conference by collaborators for Live 8, which included original Live Aid co-founder Midge Ure, Live Aid concert promoter Harvey Goldsmith, current IFPI Chairman/CEO John Kennedy, and Elton John, who also performed at Live Aid. John proudly exclaimed that “I would go on a dangerous mission with Bob. I trust him with my life. He is an honorable, honorable man and I admire him so much for what he’s doing here.”

Discussions are still going on to discuss plans to stage more concerts in the cities of the other three G8 nations, Japan, Canada, and Russia.

The BBC will broadcast the televised event Internationally around the globe and coordinate feeds to local television affiliates in various countries. AOL will also stream the shows live on the Internet. Tickets will be available through competitions via various media.

Geldof urged people across the globe to support the Make Poverty History campaign, by traveling to Edinburgh after the concerts to actively participate in the Edinburgh demonstrations which will be conducted simultaneously as the G8 Summit is being held..

Geldof in typical well intentioned and lionhearted colorful bluster, bluntly espoused “If anyone is not going to come to our party…and it’s going to be one hell of a party…they can f**k right off”.

“These concerts are the starting point for “The Long Walk To Justice”. We will not tolerate the further pain of the poor while we have the financial means and moral means to prevent it. The boys and girls with guitars will finally get to turn the world on its axis. What we started 20 years ago is coming to a political point in a few weeks. What we do next is seriously, properly, historically and politically important.”

Bob Geldof Invites Pope To Rock Concert

Bob Geldof Invites Pope To Rock Concert
By Arlene R. Weiss © Copyright May 27, 2005

Irish rocker and artist/social activist Sir Bob Geldof is in Rome today, personally requesting that the auspicious presence of His Eminence, The Pope grace a rock concert to be held in Edinburgh, Scotland, following the historic G8 Summit which will also be held in Edinburgh, July 6-8, 2005.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien, the leader of Scotland’s Catholics met with Geldof in London and said that Geldof planned on inviting the Pope to Scotland’s capital for a rock concert.

Cardinal O’Brien told Scotland’s Today program that “Sir Bob said he would love to have concerts in the great centres of the world, in London at Hyde Park, in Paris at the Eiffel Tower, in Germany, the U.S., and so on. And at the end of the concerts, he (Geldof) will call for a pilgrimage to Edinburgh asking all those involved in the concerts, and everybody else who wants to come from the G8 countries, to come to Edinburgh again.” (Culminating in a celebratory music concert to be held in Edinburgh).

“Geldof said he was going to see the Pope and the Cardinal’s Secretary Of State and Cardinal Martino (who is) in charge of justice and peace issues about the possibility of the Pope coming as well to this large gathering at the end of all the concerts.”

In observation of the New Pope, Pope Benedict XVI’s views on the “evils” of rock & roll and it’s supposedly inherent “diabolical and satanic messages”, in which he singled out artists; The Rolling Stones, Queen, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin as prime examples of rock music artists whose music is “especially evil”, it will be interesting to see if this new radically conservative Pope can be swayed by Geldof’s genuineness as to the virtues which do in fact imbue rock & roll, via these series of planned charity benefit concerts.

Let the Pope not prejudge, but let him see and hear with his own eyes, ears, and heart, personally attending this music event. Let the Pope bear witness to and be inspired by this planned final charity benefit rock concert and its performing artists in Edinburgh as ample proof of the joyous, wonderful light in rock & roll, in music. If anyone is capable of convincing the Pope of the Good that rock & roll holds and does for this world, of its uplifting grace and power in making an active difference, of its stance as an urgent plea and call to arms and positive action to and in the face of the G8 Summit’s addressing the need to end world poverty, hunger, and AIDS, it is something only a Knight…of rock & roll can do. Our thoughts and hearts are with you, Sir Bob.

Bob Geldof Officially Confirms Music Benefit Concert
By Arlene R. Weiss Copyright May 26, 2005

After weeks of Bob Geldof adamantly denying swirling press rumors and speculation of a 2nd Live Aid type music benefit, today Geldof officially confirmed plans for yet another major International star studded music benefit extravaganza. The event will be held most likely the first week of July 2005, to raise worldwide global awareness to find and enact solid resolutions to eradicate world poverty, specifically of that, in Africa, to coincide with the timing of the historic G8 Summit discussing world poverty in Scotland July 6-8, 2005. The as yet unnamed event is being possibly touted as being called Live 8.

Speaking at this year's 50th 2005 Ivor Novello Songwriting Awards in London, where Geldof and his Band Aid 20 co-organizer Midge Ure were honored with the 2004 Best Selling UK Single Award for "Do They Know It's Christmas", Geldof insists that this is not a 2nd Live Aid, but it is a major International music benefit concert planned and developed in the same spirited vein, co- organized with Live Aid co-founder and Geldof's longtime friend, musician Midge Ure of Ultravox.

On Tuesday May 31, Geldof and Ure are expected to confirm details of the charity concert for which an International media press conference has been organized for the two musicians and artist activists in London.

Geldof noted that "What started 20 years ago is coming to a political point in a few weeks. There's more than a chance that the boys and girls with guitars will finally get to turn the world around on its axis. What we plan to do in the next five weeks is seriously, properly, historically, politically important."

According to Sting, who was also on hand at the Novello Awards, and who is already confirmed as one of the headlining stars to perform, "Bob called me up and said I was doing it. He doesn't ask you, he tells you."

Bob Geldof Speaks Out At Scottish Parliament's Conference On Africa

Bob Geldof Speaks Out At Scottish Parliament's Conference On Africa

By Arlene R. Weiss Copyright 5/17/2005

Yesterday, May 16, 2005, Irish Rocker, Social Activist, World Humanitarian Bob Geldof spoke at the Scottish Parliament's Conference On Africa, held in Edinburgh, Scotland. The always outspoken, forward thinking Geldof took on the Conference's 150 representatives, rightfully blasting the world's leaders for taking inadequate measures to resolve third world poverty, as well as to resolve poverty, starvation, and increase both education and AIDS awareness and prevention in Africa.

Geldof, who is a member of British Prime Minister Tony Blair's Commission For Africa, frankly expressed his utter, complete dissapointment, frustration, consternation, and disgust at the leading western world's nations in their failure to effectively meet these intrinsic goals for the people of Africa and developing countries. He bluntly admonished the world's leaders while making an urgent plea to British Prime Minister Tony Blair to enforce holding United States President George Bush accountable for U.S. foreign aid to Africa. Geldof also bluntly stated that the leaders of the eight largest industrial nations proposed to attend the upcoming G8 Summit had better not attend at all, unless they had a concrete plan to readily enact regarding facilitating various progress and developments in forgiving third world debt and aiding global economic growth.

Bob Geldof's Millennium Call To Arms Staging Live Eight

Bob Geldof’s Millennium Call To Arms Staging Live Eight
By Arlene R. Weiss © 5/11/2005

With all the hot burning issues and goings on in music news currently, there are numerous topics that deserve my acerbic slagging. But dammit, just when I thought I could go off ranting about the next topic to pluck my nerves, good old Sir Bob…Geldof that is, has the nerve to honor the upcoming 20th Anniversary of Live Aid, by using it as leverage for planning and staging an International, large scale charity benefit concert. (At press time, press announcements fueled and amassed hype for as yet unconfirmed details of the concert).

Damn Geldof! He’s like that character Dr. Gregory House on the Fox Television Network’s new medical show “House” that’s become International watercooler buzz. Dr. House…er Bob Geldof …sorry Sir Bob, is all bluster, with a tough as nails exterior, spewing colorful, caustic curse words that would make a sailor blush….all a facade for that heart, oh that’s about as big as a lion’s, and huge enough to try to hug, heal, and save the world.

Bob Geldof never ceases to astound, confound, and put me in inspired awe. After twenty years of literally often putting his life and music career on hold to repeatedly travel to the far corners of third world war torn nations, meeting with The Pope and world leaders to work on active solutions to the world’s ills of poverty, famine, disease, and social injustice, he is planning another mammoth charity benefit music concert called Live Eight.

A conjunction of the words from Live Aid and G8 (The International Summit being held July 6-8, 2005 in Scotland. Representatives of the world’s major financial powers will be discussing and addressing solutions to Third World Poverty), Live Eight is tentatively scheduled for early to mid July 2005. July 13, 2005 will mark 20 years since Live Aid. Perfect timing indeed!

U2, a reunited Pink Floyd, Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Madonna, Coldplay, and The Cure are just a sampling of some of the many superstar artists playing mum on media buzz they may be on the bill, performing for Live Eight.

So who the hell does Geldof think he is, seizing a prime opportunity to capitalize on the sentiment of Live Aid’s 20th Anniversary, its acclaimed release at long last on DVD this year, and a historic summit meant to hash out an actual plan to reduce if not eliminate world poverty? I’ll tell you who he is. Bob Geldof is a hero, to me. And I do not use that word or take what it stands for lightly. They are in short supply in these new millennium times and so it soars one’s heart to see an actual real deal rise to the occasion…over and over, time and again, answering the call, consistently and without hesitation.

As heroes and humanitarians go, rag all the hell you want about my opinion of Sir Bob. But Bob Geldof is my hero above any celebrity (and in this case above any music artist as well), that has worked his ever lovin’ ass off for 20 years, repeatedly visiting in person, war torn, third world countries in Africa, ridden with filth, plague, famine, cholera, Ebola, rats, no running water, risking his own life, to help people in these countries who have no food, no clean/safe water, no shelter, no proper medical care.

Geldof has often focused on making special time to peruse his music career since The Boomtown Rats split up, dividing and finding time when he can (in between his social/artist activism), to record some wonderful and eclectic solo albums. But one has to conclude that whatever career Geldof has had since the behemoth known as Live Aid, and its ensuing machinery which Geldof willingly has allowed himself to be engulfed in, throwing himself head first into the trenches of the world’s problems, that his music, recording, and performing are certainly a respite, joy, and oasis from the sleepless nights and days, traveling across the world to these ravaged nations in harrowing, yes, dangerous conditions, just to help others, and to raise world wide awareness and funds to help those in need.

I will admit that Bob Geldof, to many, comes across arrogant, even a braggart (though name me one celebrity or rock star who isn’t and most of them have nothing to show for it but their Spinal Tap partying ways and a trail of trashed hotel rooms). At least Geldof puts his money where his mouth or rather his “loudmouth” as he is affectionately known by many, is. I may not always agree with his tactics, but it works for him more than any other rock star/celebrity doing charity work.

Who else but Geldof cursing and yelling on International TV, “Give us your f*****g money!” at Live Aid (which by the way he was misquoted through the years with this, and he was understandably, incredibly frustrated that people watching the concert around the globe were so caught up in being entertained, they were forgetting the purpose of Live Aid and temporarily stopped phoning in donations until his publicly televised “reminder tirade”, but I digress); who else but Geldof, could have rounded up dozens of MUCH bigger ego ridden rock stars, told them all to “park their egos at the door”, and pull off an Internationally Broadcasted all star live rock concert to a global audience of over a billion, via multi-satellite linkups to TV and radio, held in 2 continents, simultaneously, for over twelve hours, with hundreds of technical crews, TV & radio crews, music techs, stage hands, without a hitch, and never once, have you ever heard of any of those rock stars giving Geldof, the concert promoters….and most importantly, the cause of the day, any crap.

And to this day, in all of the charity work that Geldof, and his often partner in crime, U2’s Bono, do, Geldof acts no differently. And whenever he asks for other music artists to get involved, there is no infighting, no squabbling, no tantrums, no star ego trips, from any of the stars he gets involved. Everyone is happy to step up, do their part, and for the cause at hand.

Likewise, when Geldof is asked to dip his toes in the waters of another’s cause, he is also happy to do so. Geldof will personally send a video message to be aired at Nelson Mandela’s next concert, in what has been an ongoing series of global all star benefit concerts organized by Mandela, known as 46664, this one being 46664 Arctic, featuring a glittering lineup of music stars performing to raise awareness and funds to fight and find a cure for AIDS, being held June 11, 2005 in Tromso, Norway. (Likewise Mandela will deliver an urgent message to resolve the AIDS Pandemic to the leaders of the G8 Summit).

Twenty years ago in Reagan era America, we and the rest of the modern western world or “powers” as we often call them, were flush with living what we in the USA termed, the “American Dream”. Financial security, homeland safety, lifelong employment stability, corporate reliability and accountability that invested back to everyday tax paying, hard working, citizens, living a quiet, content life in our single family homes with a big yard and a friendly neighborhood. Rallying to Live Aid and the African Famine was the right thing to do for those less fortunate than us, for those that knew not of a safe, war free nation, much less food to eat.

But in this post 911 new millennium, for America and for much of the modern western nations, where massive unemployment and the implosion, collapse of the corporate infrastructure are rapidly spiraling downwards out of control, crime and drugs have taken the streets away from us and made us frightened prisoners in our own homes, and AIDS has become an International Pandemic engulfing the entire world….we realize that no one on this planet is immune or safe from poverty, war, terrorism, famine, disease. It’s here in our own homes, our own back yard. It’s no longer just an unknown face of a starving child seen via TV news footage, in a remote village on the other side of the world in some forgotten continent. It’s here at home in our shiny, capitalistic metropolis.

Bob Geldof was one of the first to open his eyes and heart to the world’s unjust horrors then. With Live Aid in 1985 and with his ongoing charity work and social activism through the ensuing years, he has continued to keep it in our mind’s eye and in our hearts as well. But now, those inhumane travesties that Geldof personally witnessed which seemingly existed only in Africa, are everywhere. From New York to Los Angeles, from London to Paris, from Toronto to Berlin, from Moscow to Tokyo.

G8 and Live Eight are the official wake up call to the entire world. No longer can we allow an event like Live Aid or Live Eight to remain a one off charity benefit event to temporarily salve the wound and ease our conscience. It’s time to create and structure a regular, concrete plan, a course of action, and view this as the beginning, the catalyst for an era where every human on this planet can live in a world without fear of war or terrorism, disease or hunger, but with peace, food, shelter, tolerance, and humanity.

Geldof is the rabble rousing rebel (and music maker), who never accepts defeat. I’ve read that whenever someone tells him that something cannot be done….his reply is always, “why”? Why, when this world has the resources, funds, technology, and humanity to make the impossible, possible. Bob Geldof PROVED that fact with Live Aid and the immense power of and difference that music can make, in impacting and calling people to arms to help solve the ills of the world. And so I am certain that he will do planet earth proud once again with Live Eight. Can we all, do the same?

The Devil You Say!

“The Devil You Say” 4/26/2005 By Arlene R. Weiss

This is from the source: NEW YORK DAILY NEWS in an article by Sheryl Connelly and Paul D. Colford called “Bet you didn't know”,

“The New York Daily News reports that Joseph Ratzinger of Bavaria, now the new Pope, Benedict XVI, has made this statement.” quote:

“He has called rock 'n' roll evil, saying it is full of "diabolical and satanic messages." He singled out the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and the Eagles as especially evil.” End quote and source.

That’s interesting, given that rock & roller Bruce Springsteen’s New album, ironically titled “Devils & Dust” a work of hope and elegiac light is being released this very day, in the wake of the election and appointment of the new Pope, Benedict XVI, and that Springsteen…one of the auteurs and most provocative of rock’s thinkers and social activists…has used rock & roll as a voice in his often selfless and bravura, physical call, to create a better world, to right wrongs, to fight social injustices, to fight evil...through…ACTION. Something that The Pope, (both Pope John Paul, and his successor, Pope Benedict XVI, has already proved with this, and several other controversial statements upon his election) have more often that not, spent time “safely” ducking their heads in the sand to avoid…pretending that while the world is rife with evil, taking the stance of “hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil”, that is, if The Pope doesn’t address it’s existence with ACTION and with words that actually serve to solve, instead of merely admonishing its existence or turning a blind eye as “evil” festers and grows, evil will just go away by itself. Right.

Like AIDS has continued to rage out of control, killing millions worldwide because the Pope condemned the use of condoms. Like the world’s ever spiraling out of control famine, starvation, poverty, and war, wages on as each Pope pays their little international celebrity visits, patting the heads of his minions living in third world and war torn nations, witnessing first hand the scourges upon people worldwide…then returning to the Vatican after their good will ambassador trips…with no follow up, no work to even so much as find help, assistance, some method of resolution or solution. Oh sure, it makes for great PR/publicity for the church though. Like condemning same sex marriages which offer medical, and parental rights to Gays, yet The Pope harbors and pardons known pedophile Priests and evil within his own house (so to speak). I could go on and on. But let me address the Pope’s statement about rock & roll, which is what this is obviously….related to.

I agree that there is a lot of shock value music out there, filled with violence, hatred, intolerance, sex, drugs and a “Hell” of a lot more (no pun intended).

But, more often than not, rock & roll from it’s first awakenings of its social conscience in the 1960’s, to the present, has served as a positive force. Not only of words….but of ACTION, and has tried to solve and uniquely often has solved at least some of the world’s injustices. From Bob Dylan’s first observations that “The answer is blowing in the wind”, to Springsteen’s “Streets Of Philadelphia” and yes Mr. Pope..to the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love”…rock & roll has been the voice of reason for some 50 years now…but more…and this is where it gets hairy for your illuminating statement, Mr. Pope. Rock & Roll has often been a courageous, stalwart call to arms and action for the betterment of the world. For, not evil as you say, but for GOOD.

Perhaps rock & roll’s finest hour was some 20 years ago, on a hot summer’s day, July 13, 1985, when of all things, punk rocker (what would the Pope say!), Bob Geldof, charmed, hounded, and corralled several dozen of the world’s biggest rock stars to participate in a little known charity event…you may remember it…the now historic, Live Aid. Nearly 8 months before, approaching Christmas 1984, Geldof and his wife were at home with their children, watching BBC Newsreel footage on television, of the millions of starving, dying masses (many of them children), in Africa, plagued by a famine of monumentally gross proportions.. Appalled and saddened by this, Geldof organized, recorded, and released an all star charity benefit record with some of the biggest stars in rock & pop music, called Band Aid, whose record, “Do They Know It’s Christmas”, released Christmas 1984, became the biggest selling song single to date, ever, and raised millions of dollars, all for charity, that was directly forwarded to and utilized for food to feed and curb those suffering the African famine.

Then, in July 1985, with Live Aid, Geldof pulled off the single most massive charity event (and music event) undertaking again to date, staging 2 simultaneous mammoth concerts, one in London, England, one in Philadelphia, USA, televised, radiocast, and broadcast via satellite to over a billion people globally, all to raise the world’s social awareness…and much needed funds to stem the African famine. Live Aid, as everyone knows, was a watershed, the biggest, most successful benefit concert…ever.

And guess who just a sampling were that day of some of the many music artists who selflessly donated their time and of course music performances..to the day to raise millions of funds for famine relief in Africa?

Gee Mr. Pope…Paul McCartney of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, Keith Richards & Ron Wood, Led Zeppelin (the very artists you singled out in your statement quoted above).

Because of Band Aid, Live Aid, the purposeful actions of the many rock & pop music artists who stepped up to the plate in support of a good cause and the hour at hand, and the ongoing relief organizations that resulted from both events,....many a man, woman, and child, in Africa, is....alive today....because of the food provided to them from those rock & roll charity events.

Live Aid and subsequent rock benefits…Amnesty International, Artists Against Apartheid, Farm Aid, even 2004’s Vote For Change concert tour in hopes of defeating George Bush’s incumbent run for U.S. President while promoting the importance of U.S. citizens’ right to vote and promoting Senator John Kerry on his campaign running for U.S. President, (led by Bruce Springsteen)…all of these events involved rock artists who not only talked the talk…they walked the walk and continue to do so.

Whether it’s U2’s Bono and Bob Geldof meeting with The Pope and world leaders to discuss and try to work on active solutions to put an end to poverty, third world debt, hunger, whether it’s Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Pearl Jam, Bright Eyes, REM, John Fogerty touring across the USA to encourage our own USA to rally, to vote, to change the powers that be in the Oval Office, whether it’s literally hundreds of rock artists worldwide who in recent months have staged numerous benefit concerts, events, and recordings to raise funds for the victims of the devastating tsunami, Rock & Roll…is the one conscience we can all count on. It never ceases to be the mind, body, spirit, soul, and most of all..heart, that cries out in defiance and anger at injustice…and does not idly sit by. It fights and acts with the most powerful voice of all, music. If the Pope can’t see that, he misses one of God’s greatest gifts to man, the gift of song, of music…that can, has, and will continue to inspire, to make a difference, walking, even running, with outrage, with anger, with tears, with joy, with hope, with faith…because “rock & roll never forgets” (to quote rocker Bob Seger) and rock & roll never stops sharing, caring, giving, and continues to challenge and battle "evil" so that....Good...as one rock song says… “A Change Is Gonna Come.” Rock On!
